New Keeper Checklist

1. Before you buy — research

  • Chosen a species that matches my space, budget and experience
  • Confirmed adult size, lifespan (often 15–30+ yrs) and true setup cost
  • Read the full care sheet for my exact species
  • Know whether it needs strong UVB, and at what UVI

2. Enclosure & equipment

  • Correctly sized, front-opening enclosure with a secure lid
  • Overhead heat source + the right thermostat to control it
  • Digital probe thermometer AND a temp gun (not stick-on dials)
  • Correct UVB bulb + fixture for the species (and a reflector)
  • Hygrometer, hides (warm, cool + a humid hide where needed)
  • Species-appropriate substrate, décor and a water dish

3. Set up & dial in FIRST

  • Enclosure fully built and running for several days before the animal
  • Basking surface hits the target temp — measured, thermostat set
  • Cool end sits in range, giving a full thermal gradient
  • Humidity holds in the right band; UVB fitted and dated

4. Buying the animal

  • Buying captive-bred from a reputable breeder or shop
  • Animal looks healthy — alert, good weight, clean vent, no mites
  • Eyes clear, no stuck shed, breathing quietly (no open-mouth/mucus)
  • Have a quarantine plan before adding to any existing collection

5. First weeks home

  • Let it settle 1–2 weeks with minimal handling
  • Logging temps, humidity, feeding and behaviour
  • Offering the right food/size; not alarmed by an early skipped meal
  • Know the red-flag signs and where to find a reptile/exotics vet
