Verdict: Outdated — mostly false

Leopard geckos were kept for decades on dietary vitamin D3 alone and can survive without UVB — but modern veterinary and reptile-lighting science shows a low level of UVB (Ferguson Zone 1) improves calcium metabolism and long-term health. So "they do not need any" is outdated advice, not a rule to follow.

The evidence:

  • Leopard geckos are crepuscular and sit in Ferguson Zone 1 — the lowest-UV band — so they need far less UVB than a desert basker like a bearded dragon, but not zero (the Ferguson-zone lighting framework used by Arcadia Reptile and ReptiFiles).
  • The Merck Veterinary Manual states that "UVB exposure, rather than dietary vitamin D, may be critically important in the production of active vitamin D in the skin of green iguanas and in the subsequent prevention of bone fractures." The study was in iguanas, but the mechanism is shared by any reptile that can make D3 from UVB.
  • Metabolic bone disease from too little usable calcium is one of the most common reasons reptiles see a vet — and a low-level UVB source is cheap insurance alongside a good calcium and D3 routine.
  • The claim is not completely false: leopard geckos can be maintained on carefully dosed dietary D3, which is why they were kept that way for years — but current welfare guidance adds low UVB rather than relying on diet alone.

🔎 The short version: “leopard geckos do not need UVB” is a decades-old care-sheet line that modern lighting and veterinary science has moved past. They need far less UVB than a bearded dragon — but a low level (Ferguson Zone 1) is now the recommended, welfare-first setup. Give a weak UVB tube with plenty of shade, keep your calcium and D3 routine, and you have covered the single most common cause of illness in captive reptiles.

Why this myth is everywhere

Leopard geckos are crepuscular — active at dawn and dusk — so for years the standard advice was that they get all the vitamin D3 they need from supplemented food, and UVB is unnecessary. Plenty of geckos were kept that way and lived. That is exactly why the myth is sticky: it is not completely wrong, just out of date.

What changed is our understanding of how reptiles use light. The Ferguson zones framework sorts species by how much UV they naturally seek. Leopard geckos land in Zone 1 — the lowest band — alongside other shade-dwellers. Zone 1 is not “zero.” It means a little, reliably, is better than none.

What the science actually says

The core mechanism is not in dispute. UVB lets a reptile’s skin make vitamin D3, which lets it absorb and use calcium; without usable calcium, the body strips it from the bones — metabolic bone disease (MBD), one of the most common and most preventable reptile illnesses.

The Merck Veterinary Manual puts the weight of evidence on light rather than diet:

“UVB exposure, rather than dietary vitamin D, may be critically important in the production of active vitamin D in the skin of green iguanas and in the subsequent prevention of bone fractures.”

That specific study was in green iguanas — but the pathway is shared by any reptile that can synthesise D3 from UVB, which includes leopard geckos. Dietary D3 works, but a low, natural source of UVB is a more forgiving safety net.

What to actually give a leopard gecko

  • A low-strength UVB tube — a low-percentage linear T5, mounted at the right distance so the basking area sits around the bottom of the Ferguson range. Not a desert-strength bulb.
  • Shade and hides, always — a crepuscular animal must be able to get away from the light. Give cover across the whole gradient.
  • Keep supplementing — dust feeders with calcium and follow a sensible D3 schedule. UVB is added insurance, not a licence to skip good feeding (and if you add UVB, review your D3 dose rather than maxing both).
  • Replace the bulb ~yearly — UVB output fades long before the bulb stops glowing.

Over-supplementing D3 is possible, so if you add UVB, review your D3 dosing rather than stacking both at maximum.

Can too much UVB harm a leopard gecko?

Yes — that is why the strength matters. A desert-strength bulb aimed at a crepuscular animal with nowhere to hide can cause problems. Give a low-zone bulb, always provide shade and hides so the gecko can get away from the light, and replace UVB bulbs about every 12 months because they stop emitting useful UVB long before they stop glowing.
