Breeding Corn Snakes Responsibly: What It Really Involves (Read This First)
Corn snakes are the beginner’s genetics species, and breeding them is a classic next step — but “classic” doesn’t mean “casual.” We’ll cover it completely and responsibly, commitment and ethics first, because a blank page just hands you to a “breed corn snakes for profit” video. Read the first half properly.
🐍 The 30-second version: the market is saturated and every hatchling needs a decade-plus home. Breed only a mature, well-conditioned female (~300 g+, ~3 yr), never a small or young one. Corn breeding is usually triggered by brumation (cooling) — only ever with a healthy adult. A clutch is 10–30 eggs; incubation is a precision task. Egg binding is an emergency. They’re kept and grown solo (corns can eat cage-mates). If you can’t meet all that, the kind answer is don’t.
First: should you breed at all?

“Reptile breeding with little education and inadequate resources ends up doing more harm to the reptile community than it could do good for relieving one snake or lizard’s sex drive.”
- The market reality. Corn snakes are bred at scale; common animals sell for very little, and rescues take in plenty. “I’ll sell the babies” needs real, committed buyers.
- The maths. A clutch is commonly 10–30 eggs — that’s 10–30 snakes, each needing its own tub, a steady pinky supply, and a 15–20+ year home.

- The female pays the most. A clutch draws on her reserves; done to a small or under-conditioned female it risks egg binding (dystocia).

The brumation trigger
Corn snake breeding is usually kick-started by brumation — a controlled cooling period:
- Typically a couple of months at cooler temperatures (often around 55–60°F), with the snake fasted and gut-empty beforehand (food left in a cold snake can rot).

Pairing, ovulation and the pre-lay shed
- Pairing is a brief, supervised introduction — not shared housing (see the cohabitation answer above; corns can eat cage-mates).
- A successful female ovulates, then goes through a pre-lay shed a couple of weeks before laying, and often refuses food around then — expected.
The clutch and incubation
- She lays a clutch of ~10–30 eggs, which you’ll move to an incubation container.
- Incubate in a stable, humid medium at roughly 78–82°F, hatching in about 55–65 days — follow a detailed current breeding reference for exact medium and targets. Stability is everything; swings cause failed or deformed eggs. Candling shows which are developing.

Hatchlings: solo, always
Each hatchling goes into its own tub. First feeds are appropriately sized pinkies, and some hatchlings are slow, fussy starters (scenting can help) — normal, but another reason you need the time and feeder supply lined up. Corn snakes are never raised in groups — beyond competition, cannibalism is a real risk.
