Breeding Bearded Dragons Responsibly: What It Really Involves (Read This First)
Breeding bearded dragons is one of the deepest ends of the hobby, and we’re going to treat you like an adult about it: cover it completely and responsibly, front-loading the commitment and the ethics before the how-to. Leaving this topic blank would just send you to a forum thread or a “make money breeding beardies!” video — and this deserves better than that. So read the first half properly. If it changes your mind, that was the guide doing its job.
🥚 The 30-second version: breeding is a big, expensive, decade-spanning responsibility — not a way to make money or “let her have babies.” A clutch is 15–30+ eggs, several clutches a season, and each hatchling needs its own enclosure for 10+ years and a real home. Breed only a mature (~18 months+), healthy, well-conditioned female, never a too-young or underweight one. Egg binding is a life-threatening emergency. Incubation is a precision task. And every hatchling is raised alone. If you can’t meet all of that, the right and kind answer is don’t.
First: should you breed at all?
Breeding for looks over health has real victims — as the evidence-based care resource ReptiFiles warns of the gout now flooding the market from careless breeding:

Before a single pairing, sit with these honestly. This is the part that matters most.
- The maths of a clutch. One clutch is commonly 15–30+ eggs, and a female can lay several clutches in a season. Picture yourself responsible for twenty-plus baby dragons at once — each needing its own enclosure, daily live feeders, UVB, and heat.
- Where do they all go? Rescues and reptile-rehomers are already full of unwanted bearded dragons. Every baby you produce needs a real keeper willing to commit for 10–15 years. “I’ll sell them” is not a plan unless you have the buyers and will vet them.
- The cost and time. Feeders for dozens of fast-growing babies, multiple setups, a vet fund for complications — breeding costs money far more reliably than it makes any.
- The genetics you’re responsible for. You are deciding the health of living animals. That means not producing known-harmful combinations — don’t pair silkback-to-silkback or leatherback × leatherback for novelty scaleless babies, and understand the traits you’re combining (see bearded dragon morphs & genetics). Breeding related animals or chasing a fragile “look” is how welfare problems get baked in.
- The female pays the biggest price. Egg production draws hard on her calcium and reserves. Done to a young, small, or under-conditioned female, it’s a direct route to egg binding and metabolic bone disease.
If you can look at all of that and still say yes, for the right reasons, with a real plan — read on. If not, you’ve just made a responsible decision, and there’s no shame in it.
Why this cluster is worth answering

Readiness: size and condition, not age
The single most important welfare rule: breed by body, not by birthday.
- A female should be at least ~18 months old and at a genuine adult size and weight (around 350 g+ is commonly cited), in excellent condition, before her first clutch.
- She should have no health issues, ideally a clean recent vet check, and be a strong feeder with good body condition — check with the body-condition tool.
- When in doubt, wait. An older, stronger female handles egg production far better. There is no cost to waiting and a real cost to rushing.
Gravid: the signs and the lay box
An important thing many new keepers don’t know: a lone female can produce eggs with no male present (infertile “slugs”). So any adult female needs a lay box available, or she risks becoming egg-bound with nowhere to lay.
Signs a female is gravid (carrying eggs):
- She fills out, and you may see the grape-like cluster of eggs through her flank.
- She becomes restless and paces, then goes off food late in the process.
- She starts digging — the clear signal she’s looking to lay.
Give her a lay box: a deep container of slightly moist, tunnel-holding substrate she can dig and turn around in. Then let her get on with it undisturbed.
The emergency you must know: a female straining to lay but unable to, or going lethargic with a full, egg-heavy belly, may be egg-bound (dystocia) — a life-threatening emergency. Incubation and incubator setup
If eggs are fertile and you’re incubating, understand up front: this is a precision task, and unstable temperature or humidity is the usual reason clutches fail.
- Incubator: a thermostat-controlled reptile incubator holding a stable temperature — not a guess, not a fluctuating cupboard. A reliable thermostat and a verified thermometer are non-negotiable.
- Temperature: bearded dragon eggs are commonly incubated around 82–86°F (28–30°C); incubation temperature can influence outcomes in this species, which is one more reason to follow a detailed, current breeding reference for exact targets rather than a rough number.
- Medium & humidity: eggs sit half-buried in a moist (not wet) medium, in a container that holds humidity, kept stable throughout.
- Handling: don’t rotate the eggs — mark the top and keep their orientation.
- Timeline: hatching typically takes roughly 55–75 days.

Hatchlings: raised apart, always
The moment they hatch, the cohabitation rules apply at their most critical. Clutch-mates compete for food and warmth and will bite toes, tails, and limbs — cannibalism is a real risk — and group tubs hide and spread illness. So:
- Every hatchling gets its own tub or enclosure, with its own heat and UVB.
- They eat small, appropriately-sized insects frequently, dusted correctly, on correct temperatures so they can digest.
- If you can’t set up and feed 15–30 individual babies, that’s not a logistics problem to solve later — it’s the answer to “should I breed?” arriving on time.
🌵 Responsible breeding isn’t about whether you can — plenty of people can. It’s about whether you should, for the animals, with the space, knowledge, money, and homes lined up first.
