What do reptile keepers ask about most?

In our analysis of 388 care questions from the reptile communities, feeding was the single biggest topic (about 32% of care questions), followed by health/'is my reptile sick?' (14%), setup & enclosure (13%), behaviour/'is this normal?' (12%) and morphs/ID/buying (12%). Heat and UVB is its own major topic at 10% — something amphibian keepers rarely ask about.

How did you work out what reptile keepers ask?

We collected over 3,100 unique posts and comments from reptile-keeping communities (Reddit's r/beardeddragons, r/leopardgeckos, r/ballpython, r/cornsnakes, r/crestedgecko and r/reptiles, plus search autocomplete), filtered them to the 866 that were actually questions, and clustered the 388 care/husbandry ones by topic. It's a demand signal — what people ask — not a source of care facts.

What worries new reptile keepers the most?

Getting the basics right — especially feeding (how much, how often, why won't it eat?), health ('is this normal or is my reptile sick?'), and the setup itself (enclosure, heat and UVB). Underneath almost every question is a keeper who cares and is anxious about making a mistake.

How is this different from what amphibian keepers ask?

Feeding tops both. But reptile keepers ask far more about heat and UVB (a defining reptile husbandry challenge) and about body condition ('is my gecko overweight?'), while amphibian keepers ask more about breeding, eggs and morphing. The shared thread is 'am I doing this right?'

What Reptile Keepers Actually Ask: 866 Real Questions, Analysed

Most “what do beginners need to know?” advice is guesswork. So we did something different: we read what reptile keepers actually say — thousands of posts and comments — and pulled out every real question to see what people genuinely worry about. Here’s the data.

The 30-second version: Across 388 care questions from the reptile communities, feeding is the single most-asked topic, followed by health (“is my reptile sick?”), setup, behaviour, and morphs/ID/buying. How we did this

We’re a care site, so we wanted the roadmap to come from real keepers, not from us:

We collected over 3,100 unique posts and comments from reptile-keeping communities — Reddit’s r/beardeddragons, r/leopardgeckos, r/ballpython, r/cornsnakes, r/crestedgecko and r/reptiles, plus search autocomplete.
We filtered them to the 866 that were actually questions (they asked something).
We kept the 388 that were about care/husbandry and clustered them by topic.

The reptile-keeping communities we drew from are huge — r/beardeddragons (~686k), r/reptiles (~209k), r/ballpython (~148k), r/leopardgeckos (~134k), r/crestedgecko (~77k) and r/cornsnakes (~39k) total well over 1.2 million members (2025 figures). This is a demand signal — what people ask — never our source for what’s true. The facts in our guides are checked against authorities; the questions come from the community.

The big picture: it’s all “am I doing this right?”

The striking thing isn’t any single topic — it’s the emotion underneath. Whether it’s “how often should I feed?”, “is this normal?”, or “is my reptile sick?”, the vast majority of questions come from a keeper who cares and is worried about getting it wrong. Almost nobody is asking how to cut corners.

That’s the whole reason Baskden exists: honest, judgment-free answers for people who love their animal and just want to do right by it. The data says that’s most keepers.

What’s different about reptiles (vs amphibians)

We ran the same analysis for amphibian keepers on our sister site, and two differences stand out:

Heat and UVB is a distinctly reptile worry (10% of care questions here, barely a topic for amphibian keepers). Getting the lighting and thermal gradient right is genuinely the hardest part of reptile husbandry — and keepers know it.
Body condition comes up a lot — “is my leopard gecko overweight?” is one of the most repeated questions in the corpus, which is exactly why we built a body-condition checker.

Feeding, health and “is this normal?” are universal across both hobbies.

Honest limits of this analysis

We believe in showing our working, including the caveats:

The corpus leans toward the biggest beginner communities (bearded dragons, leopard geckos, ball pythons, corn snakes, crested geckos), so advanced species like monitors, tegus and chameleons are under-represented.
Keyword clustering is approximate: a question can land in more than one topic, and some get missed. Treat the percentages as directional, not precise.
Community subscriber counts are ~2025 floors (the current numbers are equal or higher).
This is a snapshot of public questions; quieter keepers who never post are, by definition, not counted.
